Update from the Co-op
February 25, 2026
Dear Members,
After extensive reflection and careful analysis, Boston Building Resources has made the difficult decision to pause daily operations at the Co-op in response to ongoing, unfavorable market conditions. Over the past decade, the Co-op has recorded operating losses in six of the last ten years, underscoring an unsustainable financial trajectory.
To strengthen performance, the Board and management eliminated underperforming categories such as doors and windows and made the difficult decision to reduce staffing levels. The kitchen department was maintained for an additional 10 months, through February 2026, to support continuity and evaluate recovery potential.
Despite these corrective actions, margin improvement has been limited due to persistent adverse market conditions, necessitating the challenging decisions now before us. We know this change may feel unsettling, and we want to reassure our members that this decision reflects external economic realities—not a loss of faith in the co-op’s mission, values, or community. The co-op’s history, purpose, and people remain deeply valued, and this moment is about stewardship and care, not retreat.
While daily operations are paused, the cooperative entity itself will remain dormant as the Board of Directors, together with the community, explores new ideas and future possibilities. This period of dormancy allows space for creativity, learning, and member-driven visioning. The Co-op faces significant deferred maintenance that requires urgent attention, legal questions regarding the property and latterly, no operating income to resource navigating these issues. Member input and assistance will be essential to visioning what’s next, and we warmly welcome your input, expertise, financial support, and participation as we collectively consider what the next chapter could be.

We are profoundly grateful to our members, whose belief in cooperation, sustainability, and shared access has shaped Boston Building Resources for decades. What many of you loved about the co-op—its sense of community, its commitment to environmental responsibility, and its focus on affordability and accessibility—was never just about a business model. It was about values, relationships, and impact. Those values are not disappearing; they are very much alive.
The shared values of the co-op proudly persist in the Boston Building Resources Reuse Center, the nonprofit established by the co-op and built on the very foundation our members helped create. The Reuse Center embodies what the co-op has always stood for: community connection, sustainability in action, practical skill-building, and access to affordable materials and knowledge. Through its workshops, CASE grant program, and daily operations, the Reuse Center is making tangible, positive difference in our community every single day.
Now more than ever, the Reuse Center needs your support. Continued participation in workshops, donations, volunteering, and advocacy are critical to sustaining this work and ensuring that the co-op’s values continue to thrive in a changing landscape. Supporting the Reuse Center is not just a way to help a nonprofit—it is a way to carry forward what you loved about the co-op and to keep its mission active, visible, and impactful for years to come.
We will continue to keep our members updated as we navigate next steps together.
